“Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all you lands. Sing to the Lord; bless His name, announce his salvation day after day. Tell His glory among the nations; among all His people, His wondrous deeds”

–Psalm 96, 1-3, Lectionary for Mass

Dear Brother Deacons:

This past Fall 20 of us gathered at St. James the Apostle Parish to learn and improve our skills at singing the diaconate dialogues of the Mass of the new English Roman Missal. We did this to enter more deeply into our own Liturgical participation in the sacred paschal mystery of our Lord, and to take our proper place in leading the congregation to do the same. We all improved our singing skills and liturgical ministry.

Now we invite you, also, to join with us in learning the great Holy Week chants. Singing the Exultet is one of the great parts of the Easter Vigil Liturgy.  It is  one of the highest moments of liturgical ministry we are all ordained to proclaim in song.  We have an opportunity to learn to proclaim better this ancient text that the beautiful melody coveys. We also learn it better when we learn it together.

St Basil’s School of Gregorian Chant of the University of St. Thomas is offering five consecutive THURSDAY evenings starting February 6, 2014, to teach Deacons to sing these great chants of Holy Week.

Lowell A. Davis led the Fall sessions and will lead us in the winter sessions. He is a veteran teacher of chant in the liturgy and conducts “schools” for chant at the University of St. Thomas and chant workshops in parishes for singers and ministers.

Please look at the accompanying program and make some time to join in this important way in which we minister and pray the Liturgy.
