“Educating Leaders of Faith and Character”

Robert Ivany, Ph.D.,
President of the University of St. Thomas

“Gregorian Chant teaches us how to pray the Liturgy in song. Handing on the prayer of the Liturgy is what any catholic university needs to teach.”

Dominic Aquila, Ph.D
Vice President for Academic Affairs

St. Basil’s makes its home at the University of St. Thomas. The University is a Catholic University offering undergraduate courses in liberal arts, professional undergraduate degrees, and graduate school degrees at the MA, and Ph.D. level.

St. Basil’s School of Gregorian Chant takes its name after the patron of the Fathers of the Congregation of St. Basil, St. Basil, Doctor of the Church, and composer of early Liturgy.. The University of St. Thomas was founded by the Fathers of the Congregation of St. Basil in 1947, at the invitation of Bishop Wendolyn J. Nold.  The University offers a bachelor’s degree in Music, and a Master’s of Liberal arts on Voice.

The Graduate School of Theology of the University operates on the campus of St. Mary’s Seminary, training men from the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and others from other regional dioceses for ordination to the Priesthood.

We operate under the auspices of the Campus Ministry of the University, under the direction of Rev. Michael Buentello, Chaplain of the University. St. Basil’s School serves liturgical music of the university in the beautiful Chapel of St. Basil.

“St. Thomas is the patron of our University. He composed the liturgy for the feast of Corpus Christi. We welcome all who come to be transformed in learning singing our sacred liturgy in the beautiful chant inspired by God’s word.”
